Nacque dal cervello di Zeus. Un giorno il padre degli Dei aveva un terribile mal di testa e chiese soccorso a suo figlio Efesto, il quale non essendo un medico ma un fabbro, non seppe far altro che spaccargli la testa con un colpo d’ascia. Dallo squarcio uscì Atena in completo assetto di guerra con la lancia tra le mani e l’elmo in testa. Rappresentò sia per i Greci che per i Romani l’intelligenza.
